Beacon Island

Description

Beacon Island is 7.5-acre island in the Pamlico Sound that is home to brown pelicans. Audubon North Carolina, the owner of the island, and the North Carolina Coastal Federation partnered for a 393.5-linear foot marsh toe revetment along the western shoreline of the island, which restored 0.045 acres.

Technical Details

This marsh toe revetment was built in eight sections off the shoreline. Another 8,297 bushels of recycled oysters were used for 2.25 acres of nine patch oyster reefs along 750 linear feet of shoreline. Each patch oyster reef reaches a foot high. The patch reefs are seaward of the marsh toe revetment.
