Grand Isle and St. Bernard Oyster Reef

Description

The Nature Conservancy with funding from NOAA restored 3.4 miles of oyster reefs along the Lousiana Coast at the Grand Isle and St. Bernard. Working with Coastal Environments, Inc., they place articial reefs made from interlocking, metal triangles structures filled with mesh bags of oysters. Oyster larvae attached themselves to these structure, creating miles of habitat for estuarine species. Not only did the project better the shoreline habitat, but it also improved the local economy as it created 92 jobs in the area.
